Angela Gaffney-Smith

“Whether I print or paint in black and white or color, I want to present what at first seems like straightforward images,
but if you look closer you’ll find lines and layers, shapes and shades, all design within design”. -Angela Gaffney-Smith

Angela Gaffney-Smith is a watercolor painter and printmaker based in Saugerties, New York.
Born in Birmingham, England, she moved with her family to the United States from Ontario, Canada.
Today, Angela's studio is located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains.

Education and experience

B.A. SUNY New Paltz, Magna Cum Laude
Woodstock School of Art, Woodstock, NY

Inspiration

Angela's other interests include her woodland garden, stonework from the quarry on the property, and sewing;
especially with tulle. There is a connection with the light, airy quality of tulle and watercolor versus the solid,
direct line of printmaking and bluestone.

Reviews

…an artist in command of her medium and in touch with her subjects…
Ray Steiner, Art Times, Vol. 10, no. 3

..Gaffney-Smith’s monotypes are outstanding…Kingston Daily Freeman, April 2001

“The vibrant colors, strong composition and a might talent for drawing evident in Angela’s paintings belie the challenges of watercolor. The medium is difficult to master, but when a painter does master it, as Gaffney-Smith does, the results are outstanding.” Catskill Guide magazine, November 2007
